Madam Greta

This week ends an 8-week Nursing Research class I've been teaching at the nursing school. It has been a fun & exhausting 8 weeks & I'm excited to see how my students do on their final exam & paper.

I was very nervous at the beginning of the class, wondering if I know the material well enough to teach it or if I will ever be able to learn all of my students names. It turns out I am a pretty smart lady & have a good memory.  Luckily I only have 24 students!

Over the past 8 weeks we have gone through the 10 steps in the research process, they have written a problem statement with a literature review, learned how to find scholarly journal articles online (which is NOT easy when you don't have a subscription to a journal database & slow internet), learned how to make a work plan & budget for a research proposal (very basic), AND I taught them a little about March Madness too - they didn't care.

Things about my class & teaching:

  • The students are SO smart
  • Preparing a 3hr lecture and 3hr tutorial each week is hard work!
  • The students seem excited about the possibility to help change nursing in Fiji
  • Every time I walk into the room for class, the students all stand up and say "Good morning Madam"
  • I talk WAY to fast for ESL students - one of the students from last year told me this at the bar one night because my students told him
I know they will be good nurses & hopefully this class has sparked an interest in research for some of them.
